The most common LUFS questions

What does -23 LUFS mean?

-23 LUFS is the loudness standard for European TV and radio, set out in the EBU recommendation R128 (in the US, ATSC A/85 uses a similar -24 LKFS). Broadcasters require a programme to average exactly that loudness, so ads, news and films all arrive at the same level. For streaming releases, -23 LUFS is too quiet: Spotify and co. aim for -14 to -16 LUFS, so your track would sound clearly quieter than everything around it. The value matters when your music runs on TV, in ads or in film – for example through sync licensing.

Is -10 LUFS too loud?

For streaming, usually yes. Spotify and YouTube normalize to around -14 LUFS, so a track at -10 LUFS gets turned down by roughly 4 dB. Afterwards it doesn't sound louder than a -14 LUFS master – it just has less dynamics, and kick and snare lose their punch. In club, EDM and hip-hop productions -10 LUFS is still common, because DJs and clubs don't normalize. Rule of thumb: as loud as the song takes without audible pumping or distortion, with the true peak cleanly limited at -1 dBTP.

What LUFS level is right for Spotify?

Spotify normalizes to -14 LUFS integrated by default, Apple Music to -16, Deezer to -15. You don't need a separate master per platform: a clean master somewhere between -14 and -10 LUFS with a true peak of -1 dBTP at most works everywhere. More background in the glossary under What is LUFS?.

TARGETS 2026

LUFS targets for Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube & co.

This is the loudness the platforms bring a track to on playback. If your master is louder, it gets turned down.

PlatformTarget (integrated)Recommended true peak
Spotify-14 LUFS-1 dBTP
Apple Music-16 LUFS-1 dBTP
YouTube / YouTube Music-14 LUFS-1 dBTP
Amazon Music-14 LUFS-2 dBTP
Tidal-14 LUFS-1 dBTP
Deezer-15 LUFS-1 dBTP
SoundCloudno normalization-1 dBTP
Broadcast (EBU R128)-23 LUFS-1 dBTP

Guide values as of 2026 – the platforms may change them. The broadcast value is a delivery spec for TV and radio, not playback normalization.

HOW THE CHECKER MEASURES

Measured like a pro LUFS meter – just in your browser.

Integrated loudness (LUFS-I) follows ITU-R BS.1770-4: every channel runs through the K-filter (a high shelf that mimics the ear's sensitivity, plus a high-pass against low rumble), then the energy is averaged in 400 ms blocks with 75 % overlap. Two gates remove silence and quiet passages: absolutely everything below -70 LUFS, and relatively everything more than 10 LU below the average. The checker computes the filter coefficients for your file's actual sample rate, so 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz are each measured correctly.

Loudness range (LRA) per EBU Tech 3342 describes the dynamics across the whole track: from 3-second sections it calculates the distance between the 10th and 95th percentile of loudness. True peak (dBTP) also catches peaks between the samples: the signal is oversampled (4× at 44.1 and 48 kHz), because only the reconstruction in the converter – or the stores' conversion to AAC and MP3 – reveals whether it clips.

Your file never leaves your device. The checker reads WAV and AIFF sample-accurately at the original rate; FLAC and MP3 are decoded by your browser. The calculation runs in a background thread so the page stays responsive. Before a release, OGRECORDS™ audio QC additionally checks every track for loudness, clipping and phase problems – more on /distribution.
