What are royalty splits?
A royalty split divides a track’s or release’s earnings between everyone involved automatically: feature artist 30%, producer 20%, you the rest — set once, accounted correctly forever. Without splits, collaboration means spreadsheets, trust and monthly manual transfers. With splits, every share flows directly to the right person.
How the royalty flow works
Streaming earnings from all platforms arrive at the distributor and are accounted per track. If a split sits on the track, every payout is divided by the stored percentages automatically — each participant sees their share in their own dashboard and gets paid directly. Ownership stays untouched: a split distributes money, not master rights.
Setting up splits properly
Agree the percentages before the release — in writing, even among friends. Typical are 50/50 for equal collaborations or 15–25% for producers without a beat sale. At OGRECORDS™ you create splits right in the release wizard: invite the payee, set the percentage, done — unlimited payees, per track or per release, always visible on /royalty-splits. A step-by-step guide is in the blog: setting up royalty splits.
Frequently asked questions
Does a royalty split also distribute the rights to the song?
No — a split distributes money only. Master and composition rights stay untouched; who holds which rights is a separate agreement (e.g. the producer agreement).
What happens if a split payee has no account?
The payee gets an email invitation and sees their share in their own dashboard after registering. Unclaimed shares fall back to the release owner after the deadline.
Do royalty splits cost extra?
Not at OGRECORDS™ — unlimited split payees per track or release are part of the standard deal.
Enough theory — get going.
You now know what happens between upload and stream. The release wizard handles the rest.
