Dolby Atmos is a 3D audio format in which sounds aren’t fixed to left and right speakers but placed freely in space as objects — including above and behind the listener. On headphones, it is rendered binaurally; on suitable speaker setups, it plays back in true surround. Apple Music calls this playback Spatial Audio. What’s the difference between Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio?
Dolby Atmos is the format in which the mix is created and delivered. Spatial Audio is Apple’s name for immersive playback on Apple Music, AirPods and other devices. So when a song on Apple Music shows “Dolby Atmos,” you’re hearing a purpose-made Atmos mix — not an automatic conversion of the stereo master.
How does Atmos work technically?
An Atmos mix consists of a bed, a classic multichannel foundation, and objects placed in space using position data. The format allows up to 128 simultaneous tracks of bed and objects. The renderer on the playback device only works out at listening time how this information is distributed across the available speakers or headphones. That’s why the same mix adapts in the car, in a home theater and on headphones without a separate file for each setup.
Which file do I need for an Atmos release?
Streaming services expect an Atmos mix as ADM BWF — a WAV file in Broadcast Wave Format with embedded Atmos metadata, as exported from Dolby renderers and common DAWs. A stereo master isn’t enough, and a plain upmix without further work rarely does the format justice. Important: the Atmos mix doesn’t replace the stereo master; it is delivered in addition, and the stores play the right version depending on the device.
