Mastering for Streaming: The Truth About LUFS

What are LUFS and why are they important?

LUFS stands for Loudness Units Full Scale and is a standardized unit of measurement for the perceived loudness of an audio signal. Unlike peak level, which only measures the loudest spikes, LUFS considers the average loudness over a certain period. This is crucial because it reflects how loud your music actually sounds to the listener.

Streaming services use LUFS to normalize the loudness of all songs on their platform. This ensures a more consistent listening experience and prevents listeners from constantly adjusting the volume. Your music will be made louder or quieter to match the platform's target value. If your track is too quiet, it will be boosted – which can amplify noise. If it's too loud, it will be turned down – unnecessarily compressing the dynamics.

There's no universal 'perfect' number, as these values can change and vary slightly depending on the algorithm.

The key is to create a master that is dynamic enough to withstand a reduction without loss of quality, but also loud enough not to be unnecessarily boosted. A good guideline is often -14 LUFS to -16 LUFS (integrated) with True Peaks no higher than -1 dBTP. This gives you headroom and ensures your music sounds good on all platforms.

Forget the 'Loudness War' of past eras. The goal is no longer to have the loudest track, but the one with the best dynamics and sound quality. A master that is too loud will simply be turned down by streaming services, which can degrade sound quality as the dynamics were unnecessarily compressed before even reaching the platform.

Focus on creating a mix with good balance and sufficient headroom. During mastering, you should then aim to preserve dynamics and use only as much compression and limiting as necessary to achieve the desired sonic character, without 'crushing' the music. Your master should be able to breathe.
