Rejected on Release Day? Avoid These 3 Cover Art Mistakes

Your track is mixed, mastered, and scheduled – and then an unexpected notification halts your release. Being rejected on release day kills momentum and frustrates your fans. In most cases, DSP rejections are not caused by the audio itself, but by simple, avoidable mistakes in artwork formatting and metadata matching.

Step 1: Keep It Minimal – Less Text Is More

Major streaming platforms follow strict formatting guidelines. The most common artwork issue is cluttered text. Your cover art should contain strictly your artist name and the exact release title – nothing else.

Never include social media handles, website links, store logos, or temporary marketing slogans such as 'Out Now' or release dates. DSPs view these as promo clutter and will immediately reject the release. Cover art is meant to be permanent, so time-sensitive claims do not belong on the canvas.

Step 2: Match Metadata Character by Character

Streaming stores cross-check visible cover text against submitted track metadata. If your cover says 'The Band', your metadata field cannot simply say 'Band'. Spelling, punctuation, and artist names must match identically down to every character.

The same rule applies to featured artists. If a collaborator is mentioned on the image, they must be listed correctly in the metadata. With our Musikvertrieb running DDEX 4.3.2 standards across 38+ DSPs in 240+ territories, clean inputs ensure fast validation without store friction.

Step 3: Check Technical Specs and Licensing

Technical requirements are non-negotiable. Your image must be square (1:1 aspect ratio), at least 3000 x 3000 pixels, and exported in the RGB color space as a high-quality JPG or PNG. CMYK color profiles or pixelated files fail automated quality control checks.

Ensure you hold full commercial rights to all visual elements. Do not include third-party logos, pricing, or barcodes on the artwork. Platform identifiers like the ISRC are assigned automatically by OGRECORDS™ in the system metadata, so keep your visual canvas clean.

Secure a Smooth Launch on Schedule

Avoiding submission errors ensures your launch timeline remains intact. Clean artwork lets you set up tools like a Pre-Save link early, building traction well ahead of release day.

OGRECORDS™ offers a 10 % revenue share model with no annual fees, non-exclusive terms, and 100 % master ownership. Check your artwork against these guidelines once, upload with confidence, and let your music speak for itself.
